What role in civil engineering do you want to pursue? We raised this question last month to get an idea of what our Tekla Campus users strive to do. We found out that 44% of our users are interested in pursuing structural engineering, and the next top growing career choice are steel detailers, followed by project managers and concrete /rebar detailers.

Role in civil engineering: structural engineer

 

Structural Engineers play a vital role in both design and construction. It is their role to confirm the structural reliability of the project, while also ensuring the structure maintains its architectural integrity. While working with multiple materials, structural engineers test the structure under loading, collaborate with architects and discover ways to make the project more efficient. As BIM is being mandated and woven into our design build operate workflows, structural engineers are beginning to see how BIM can streamline their workflows as well. By utilizing the geometry found in the architectural model, structural engineers can synchronize design & architectural models together, maximizing the use of the BIM data, minimizing rework, increasing productivity and reducing human error. But these benefits are also being discovered further down the DBO workflow.

Steel Detailers are also seeing the benefits of maximizing the geometry. By taking the structural model, detailers can easily create detailed constructible models. These information rich models provide a powerful source of intelligent and well organized information for fabrication. The data can then be read by CNC processing machinery, fabrication machinery and robotic welding machines.

Concrete Rebar Detailers are seeing the benefits as well. With projects becoming more and more complex, concrete rebar detailers can use these constructible models to detail the most complex rebar, check for clashes, manage fabrication and communicate, and visualize their solutions with ease.
