Indian Institute of Technology, Madras students immersed in virtual design in construction. Trimble Solutions India Ltd. recently conducted a two day workshop at IIT Madras in Building Sciences department. Indian Institute of Technology Madras is among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in center of Chennai city.
The 2 day workshop was provided to Master degree level students within the construction and structural engineering programs. The primary goal was to provide hands-on experience with some of the emerging technologies introduced by Trimble. During the seminar, students were given access to download Tekla Structures for free via Tekla Campus, Trimble's free online education community. They then walked through guided lectures for how to improve the LOD of the architectural model by adding detail increasing its constructability. Later in the seminar, they downloaded VICO office through Trimble School Learning programme, and learned how to organize project details.
Communication and collaboration also were important topics during the seminar. Students were introduced to Sketchup Viewer & Hololens. Students virtually walked through their models and experienced design prior to construction. This proved most powerful, as students were able to communicate design intent and understand construction issues prior to building. The workshop in total involved both faculty & students from the university.
Special thanks to Prof. Dr. Ashwin Mahalingam who conducted this seminar in partnership with Trimble's technical team, Mr. R Rajasekar, Mr. Uday Pandhe, Mr. Shankaralingam G and Mr. Mitra Barun Dutta. Another special thanks to Mr. Rajan Aiyer Country Manager Trimble India who came to encourage students on Saturday and update them about Trimble’s overall portfolio and Design, Build, Operate (DBO) workflows.
